ABSTRACT

Avaliou-se o efeito da suplementação com óleo de linhaça na dieta, com ou sem injeção de selenito de sódio, sobre o perfil de ácidos graxos e sobre a estabilidade oxidativa do leite de vacas leiteiras. Catorze vacas foram distribuídas em três tratamentos: as do grupo 1, que receberam diariamente 400mL de óleo de linhaça (LIN); as do grupo 2, 400mL de óleo de linhaça + 0,2mg/kg de selenito de sódio IM (LINSe); e as do grupo 3 (controle), que não foram tratadas (C). O óleo foi fornecido diariamente após 15 dias da aplicação única de selenito de sódio, e o experimento teve duração de quatro semanas. Os animais suplementados com o óleo de linhaça produziram leite com altas porcentagens de ácido linoleico conjugado (CLA) e de ômega 3, contudo mais suscetível à oxidação. A aplicação injetável de selenito de sódio mostrou-se eficaz ao impedir a oxidação prematura do leite. Concluiu-se que a inclusão do óleo de linhaça na dieta de vacas leiteiras resulta em aumento do CLA, do ômega 3 e, consequentemente, da oxidação do leite, necessitando, assim do uso de substâncias antioxidantes ou promotores antioxidantes, como o selenito de sódio injetável.


The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of dietary linseed oil supplementation with or without injectable sodium selenite on the fatty acid profile and oxidative stability of milk from dairy cows. Fourteen cows were allocated into four treatment groups: Group 1 which received 400mL of linseed oil daily (LIN); Group 2, 400mL of linseed oil + 0,2mg/BW sodium selenite IM (LINSe); Group 3, untreated controls (C). The oil was supplied daily after 15 days of a single application of sodium selenite and during 4 weeks. Animals supplemented with linseed oil produced milk with higher levels of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and omega 3, but were also more susceptible to oxidation. The application of sodium selenite was effective to prevent premature oxidation of milk. We concluded that the supplementation of a cow's diet with linseed oil promoted increased CLA and omega 3 in milk, which in turn becomes more susceptible to oxidation, requiring the use of antioxidants or promoters of antioxidant activity such as injectable sodium selenite.

ABSTRACT

Procaine is a local anesthetic used by dentists for decades. Nowadays it is being used to treat depression, increase the libido and act on inflammatory conditions and also to induce weight loss, among other uses. However, there has been criticism of such treatments with this substance, alone or in combination. The lack of a scientific basis makes its use subjective and unfounded and often potentially harmful to the individual. Therefore, the aim of this review is to find scientific evidence of systemic actions of procaine that demonstrate its efficacy for such purposes. From a review of the scientific literature, it was concluded that, except for a possible antidepressant effect, so far there are no data proving the alleged effects of procaine. In view of this, the current use of this substance in the treatment of chronic diseases or as an anti-aging drug would not be justified. Moreover, this review emphasizes the need for pharmacological and toxicological studies on procaine and the need to carry out in vivo and in vitro safety trials on pharmaceutical preparations containing this substance, in order to prove or disqualify the indications for its use.


A procaína é um anestésico local utilizado há décadas por dentistas. Atualmente, tem sido utilizada para tratar a depressão, aumentar a libido e agir em processos inflamatórios e no emagrecimento, entre outras utilidades. Porém, existem críticas acerca do tratamento com essa substância isolada ou associada. A falta de embasamento científico para sua utilização torna seu uso infundado e subjetivo, podendo ser muitas vezes nocivo ao indivíduo. Portanto, este artigo tem como objetivo buscar evidências científicas das ações sistêmicas da procaína que comprovem seus efeitos para tais finalidades. Foi realizado um levantamento na literatura científica e concluiu-se que, exceto por um possível efeito antidepressivo, até o momento não existem dados que comprovem os efeitos alegados para a procaína. Devido a isso, os usos atuais não se justificariam no tratamento de doenças crônicas ou no combate ao envelhecimento. Além disso, esta revisão enfatiza a necessidade da realização de estudos para avaliação farmacológica e toxicológica da procaína, bem como a necessidade de aplicar-se ensaios in vivo e in vitro na avaliação da segurança de preparações farmacêuticas que contenham essa substância, a fim de comprovar as inúmeras indicações de uso.

ABSTRACT

Middle-ear findings in two groups with cleft lips and palate of the early childhood have been compared with each other. In 126 CLAP children of the Departments for Maxillofacial Surgery/ENT of the University of Hamburg tympanic cavity wash tubes (grommets) were inserted (26%) or myringotomy was done (10%) after persistence of middle ear effusions for more than 3 months. In contrast to this rather conservative approach, grommets were inserted as a primary treatment in 58 CLAP children of the Iowa Cleft Palate Center. Long-term follow-up revealed no marked middle-ear pathology in either of these groups. Repeated use of general anesthesia and the risk of othorrhoea (10-18%), however, speak against the routine practice of grommet insertion. From the otological point of view a wait-and-see strategy should be employed in the indication for grommet insertion in CLAP children after closure of the soft palate, just as it is done in the normal population (controlled intervention). Therapeutic grommet insertion performed in time will restore the normal physiology of the middle ear due to mucociliary clearance. Moreover, there is an immediate effect on the child's hearing ability thus contributing to physiological speech development. On the other hand, adequate treatment prevents defect healing sequelae such as middle-ear deafness, adhesions and cholesteatomas.
